Turismo religioso en Guanajuato

Guanajuato

Guanajuato, religious tourism destination

Guanajuato is an ideal religious tourism destination, with its many churches, shrines and religious celebrations.

The traditional Viernes de Dolores (Friday before Palm Sunday) is one of the most unique and long-lived celebrations in Guanajuato. The night before, many homes and businesses decorate altars to the Virgin of Sorrows, and the main square is filled with people of all ages buying flowers. On the day of the celebration, fruit punch and ice cream is offered free for all comers.

Viernes de Dolores brings in Holy Week, with its scents of chamomile flowers and the traditional visit to the seven churches. Visiting seven churches downtown is a surprisingly short walk in this very Catholic city, and the sights along the way make the walk quite an experience.

And no trip to Guanajuato would be complete without taking a day to visit the Christ the King monument and shrine on the mountain known as Cerro del Cubilete. The ride up the mountain on curvy cobblestone roads affords tremendous views of the surrounding landscape – as you approach the shrine, you'll see the high Sierra de Guanajuato mountains to one side, the expansive valley below and the cities of the region in the distance.

Guanajuato's many churches are a major attraction not to be missed.
